Dear friends,
I have been eating Bitter Melon fruit since I was a child, not aware of the benefits I've derived from it. I cook it with beef, pork, chicken, eggs and mixed it with other vegetable too. I always prefer eating the most bitter variety and I enjoyed it.
At present, studies have shown that Bitter Melon helps in the treatment of diabetes. It may improve blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Some Koreans called bitter melon, a miracle fruit. People in tropical regions use it to treat numerous infections and HIV.
The Bitter Melon capsules are effective in lowering blood sugar of diabetics. It has been confirmed that the fresh fruit of unripe Bitter Melon has blood lowering actions. It has been shown to significantly improve glucose tolerance without increasing blood insulin levels, and to improve fasting blood glucose levels.
This fruit is rich in iron. It has two times of beta carotene found in broccoli, two times the calcium found in spinach, two time the potassium found in bananas. It also contains vitamins C and B 1 to 3, phosphorus and good dietary fiber. In the Philippines, we believed Bitter Melon is good for the liver.
Bitter Melon contains insulin, which acts as an anti-tumor agent as shown by studies done by western scientist. It also inhibit HIV-1 infection.
Bitter Melon is one of the best herbal medicines for diabetic management. Numerous clinical studies have established the role of Bitter Melon to people with diabetes. There are three groups of constituents that are thought to be responsible for its blood lowering action.
Charantin, a compound which is composed of mixed steroids was found to be more effective in reducing blood sugar compared to the hypoglycemic drug, tolbutamide.
Polypeptide P, an insulin-like polypeptide, , appears to lower blood sugar in type I (insulin dependent) diabetics, while alkaloids present in the fruit have also been noted to have a blood sugar lowering effect.
I hope this information can help those of you who are diabetics.
To your health,
Alma
