I want to share this article from Life Extension about the benefits of Green Tea and its active compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

Arpita Basu, Ph.D, an assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Oklahoma State University, told Life Extension about her studies on several cell culture, animal and human showing the beneficial effects of green tea and (EGCG) to human health.

She and her group focus their studies on green tea. Their studies have shown that green tea polyphenols have anti-obesity, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.

Green tea extracts has shown the ability to enhance the immune system, lowers stress syndrome levels as well as increase metabolic rate.

Healthy overweight adult’s body fats and waist circumference were reduced by green tea extracts.

Total and LDL cholesterol in men and women with high blood lipids were reduced with tea supplementation containing the mixture of black tea, green tea and other tea polyphenols.

Green tea catechins showed the ability to reach the human brain and are associated with reducing the risks of Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. It can reduce the risk factors for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, oxidative stress and inflammation.

Dr, Basu’s group found out that green tea catechins are powerful antioxidant and fight inflammation, DNA damage and LDL oxidation. They can neutralize the effects of smoking, obesity, high fat diet, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

Her group is comparing the effects of drinking 4 cups of freshly prepared green tea to 4 cups of water (control) and 500 mg of EGCG supplementation to pre-diabetic adults.

Green tea polyphenols effectiveness to lower the risk factors associated with type 2diabetes and its related cardiovascular complications is the purpose of their present studies.
